Manganese Health Research Program

Manganese Health Research Program has been set up to help improve understanding of the health effects of manganese, the mechanisms by which these effects are elicited, and the influence of age, nutritional deficiencies, pre-existing disease and genetics, on the susceptibility of individuals to manganese. Work is also needed to devise improved measures to safeguard workers, and to provide new medical treatments and approaches to treat excessive manganese intake.

Manganese (Mn) is a crucial metal for industry and has many applications, principaly steel making and fabrication, but also enhancement of fuel efficiency, and water pruificaton as well as being a vital and large component of portable power sources (batteries).  However, although an essential dietary element, there is much debate concerning the potential adverse health effects that may arise from high level exposure to manganese from industrial and other sources.
