Database of Global Research Activity on Manganese (DOGRAM)

In addition to the research being conducted as part of the MHRP, there are many other activities underway world-wide. In order to provide interested stakeholders with up to date information on the scope of global research in progress, and to identify the scientists currently active in relevant fields, the Institute of Environment and Health (IEH) has developed this web-based database of research activities (DOGRAM), as part of its contribution in support of the MHRP.

What is DOGRAM

DOGRAM is a fully searchable inventory of current research activities relating to the potential health effects of, and methods of controlling and treating, exposure to Mn. As such, its scope is intended to encompass investigation of both inorganic and organic forms of Mn, and includes:

Estimation of the contributions of environmental and occupational Mn exposure to health, disease and dysfunction;
Investigation of the physiological and biochemical mechanisms (including toxicokinetic considerations);
Investigation of the physiological mechanisms that govern manganese accumulation within the brain, with special emphasis on the role of olfactory transport of the metal;
Assessment of the influence of factors, such as age, nutritional deficiencies, pre-existing disease and genetics, that influence individual susceptibility to Mn;
Investigation of the roles and mechanisms of Mn toxicity, including its role in neurodegenerative disease;
Measurement and/or modelling of occupational or environmental exposure;
Identification of existing and novel biomarkers of exposure or adverse effects; and
Development and implementation of new medical approaches to the treatment of excessive Mn exposure.

DOGRAM will thus provide an effective and powerful tool for identifying current, and recently completed, research activities and the key workers in relevant fields. As such, it should be of value to stakeholders and researchers, providing a means of minimizing the risk of duplication of effort, and over time should facilitate the identification of changing patterns of research activity, gaps in programmes, opportunities for collaboration, and emerging areas of concern.

Access to DOGRAM

The global research database can be accessed from the global research database main menu. The database can be viewed as follows:

using Browse facilities by Project, Researcher, Organisation and Funder
using Search facilities - by 4-level thesaurus - defined Keywords and also by free text.

Please note that the Dogram database uses session variables to pass, for instance, the selected researcher id from the list page to the details page. Cookies are used to store these session variables. The Dogram database, which is supported by IEH, has been imbedded in the MHRP website, and hence are regarded as "Third Party", and the session variables are therefore recognised by the web browser as being Third Party Cookies. Under the Internet explorer options there is a tab called "Privacy", which has a default option in Internet Explorer of Medium privacy; this allows use of third party cookies with a compact privacy policy. The Dogram database will work using this default setting.

Please note that if your settings are set to block all third party cookies regardless of privacy policy (the very highest setting) then the web pages will not work; to view the database please adjust your privacy settings to the default value.

Submitting Data to DOGRAM

Inclusion of your details in this database will bring your interests and research activities (and those of your organisation) to the attention of the wider research community and other stakeholders. It will facilitate contact and multidisciplinary co-operation between researchers, and allow potential funding bodies to identify you as an active researcher in this field. To fulfil its potential, the database must be as complete as possible. Please submit information on your work and interests for inclusion on the database by completing the questionnaire below. In order to keep the content up to date we will contact all registered researchers at intervals to confirm the status of their entries and gather any additional (new) information.
